NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR INVESTIGATOR / PARALEGAL OF THE YEAR AWARDS 2012

Do you know an Investigator and/or Paralegal in your office that you believe should be rewarded for their commitment, compassion, and professionalism?  The NDIA Awards Committee is encouraging members to nominate those who have demonstrated such outstanding service so that the NDIA can acknowledge them for their hard work and dedication.

We know that there are several Investigators and Paralegals who are worthy of being nominated for this award.  Please nominate an NDIA member that you believe should be acknowledged for their exemplary work in the defense of the indigent and deserves to be recognized as the next Investigator or Paralegal of the Year recipient.

Criteria for Investigator / Paralegal of the Year
The nominees must:
1.         Be members of the NDIA in good standing
2.         Perform their duties in defense of the indigent in an exemplary manner with dedication, patience, persistence, professionalism, creativity, ingenuity, and ethical integrity
3.         Submit a letter of nomination by an NDIA member, supervisor or an attorney from their office
4.         Submit two letters of recommendation from persons familiar with their work other than the nominator
5.         Have all the required information to the NDIA Awards Committee Chair by March 16, 2012.

In the selection process, the Awards Committee Chair will confirm that the individuals nominated are members of the NDIA in good standing.  The Awards Committee will then be provided with all the information received of the Nominees.  The Awards Committee will review the letters of nomination and other recommendations. They will then submit their own individual votes to the Awards Committee Chair.

The Awards Committee Chair will provide the names of the winners to the Board Liaison at least 30 days before the National Conference.  The announcement of the winners for the Investigator / Paralegal of the Year Awards will take place at the National Conference in Atlanta, Georgia April 19, 1012.

If you have any questions regarding the nomination process, please contact the NDIA Awards Committee Chairperson, Matt Whalen at (203) 503-6818 (State of CT Public Defender Office) or via e-mail, .  Submit all nomination and recommendation letters to the following address:

Assistance Needed:  Hispanic Gang Expert

Hello all of you wonderful investigators nationwide! Hope you all are doing well.  I have a very important request:

Don Simpson, an investigator from the Mohave Public Defender has been looking for an expert to assist in one of his cases. He needs a gang type of expert to assist in a case in which a kid was holding some stuff (while locked up) at the behest of a gang who threatened his family if he did not comply. I believe Don would like an expert on Hispanic gangs to testify that this type of activity is common.

Please feel free to email me back or Don directly at   should you have questions regarding the request.

Thank you in advance if you can help and I hope to see you all at NDIA this year in Georgia!

Dawn Wilson-APDIA Chairperson
Special Investigator
Office of the Public Defender

The Letters That Became a Documentary Movie:
A Short Mitigation Film

Appearing above is a short film made by a former investigator in Alameda County. Although it is not about a capital case per se, it is certainly about mitigation. The story is classic and pertains to most of our inner city defendants. Please feel free to use this for training or any other purpose that might be helpful.

Immigration rights: U.S. launches new hotline for detainees

December 29, 2011

Los Angeles Times

Federal immigration officials Thursday announced the creation of a telephone hotline to ensure that detainees held by local police are informed of their rights.

The toll-free number, (855) 448-6903, will field queries from detainees held by state or local law enforcement agencies if the detainees "believe they may be U.S. citizens or victims of a crime," the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency said in a statement...
